RFsTOMO2 – dual-band satellite tomography receiver

RFsTOMO2 outdoor test

What is satellite tomography?

A satellite tomography receiver is a radio scientific instrument that measures ionospheric electron density and distribution via signal transmission, typically using low orbit satellites that carry an appropriate dual frequency beacon. As these transit the sky, the tomography receiver measures, as a function of satellite location, the radio path group delay (phase) and attenuation characteristics from which the relevant electron density may be calculated.

The RFsTOMO2 tomography receiver

The RF-shamaanit Oy RFsTOMO2 receiver has a specially designed dual band, co-axis, Right Hand Circularly polarized antenna directly above the mast tube mounted radio receiver. This instrument is fully independent and provides both quick-look data and raw data downloadable over fiber optical LAN. A future implementation of this equipment could be e.g. single frequency tomography. The instrument is easy to deploy and relocatable with reception based on software-defined radio and FPGA technologies. The receiver is protected by a three-layer EMC-shielded outdoors enclosure.
